Frequently Asked Questions about

SARAH BUTLER FOR CIRCUIT JUDGE

What does a Circuit Judge do?
!
"

A Circuit Judge presides over serious civil and criminal cases. The role requires managing court proceedings, ruling on legal issues, applying the law consistently, and ensuring every case is handled fairly and efficiently.

Unlike attorneys, judges do not advocate for one side. Their responsibility is to listen carefully, evaluate the law and facts, and make impartial decisions that uphold the integrity of the court.

What types of cases does the Circuit Court handle?
!
"

Circuit Courts handle a wide range of matters, including both civil and criminal cases. These can include jury trials, complex legal disputes, motions and hearings, and matters that require careful application of evidentiary and procedural rules.

The work varies from day to day, which is why experience inside the court system matters.

Why are you running for Circuit Judge?
!
"

We’ve been blessed to have steady judicial leadership in Madison and Rankin Counties. I’ve seen it firsthand and worked with the very judges you have elected in the past. Having seen this in action, I know our courts work best when they are led with preparation. I want to continue steady leadership in our courts. Having invested my entire career in Mississippi Circuit Courts, I’m ready to bring that experience to the bench.

What experience prepares you for this role?
!
"

For more than a decade, I’ve worked alongside sitting Circuit Judges, helping them manage cases, weigh evidence, and make fair, lawful decisions.

My experience includes working on both civil and criminal matters, which requires neutrality, discretion, and a deep respect for the law. This is the same perspective the role of Circuit Judge demands.

Are you an attorney?
!
"

Yes. I graduated from Mississippi College School of Law. While I’m not in private practice, I’ve always been in the courtroom. Judges are responsible for presiding over cases, ruling on legal issues, and ensuring fairness. My legal career has focused on supporting judges in exactly that work: applying the law, managing proceedings, and ensuring consistency in the courtroom.

What kind of judge would you be?
!
"

I’d be the same kind of judge as I am a human - steady, calm, fair, and prepared. It’s what you would expect from someone who has worked inside a Circuit courtroom for a decade. I believe every person who enters the courtroom deserves to be heard and treated with respect, and every decision should be grounded in the law and the facts, free from politics or outside influence.

How do you ensure fairness in the courtroom?
!
"

Fairness comes from careful listening, consistent application of the law, and treating every case with the same seriousness and respect.

My work has always required neutrality and balance, considering all sides before reaching a decision. That approach would guide me on the bench.

How do you handle pressure or difficult cases?
!
"

I’ve made a habit over the years of thinking one step ahead to support all of the judges I’ve worked with. Judges can only be successful if they are prepared. That’s what makes them steady. My experience preparing for big decisions means it doesn’t feel like pressure because you’ve put in the time and effort.

How will you remain impartial as a judge?
!
"

That’s a judge's job. I wouldn’t be running for judge if I didn’t know how it’s done. Remaining independent of politics and personalities is a must. My job has never required me to take sides.

How will you treat attorneys and litigants in your courtroom?
!
"

Anyone who knows me knows how I treat people as a whole. Everyone deserves professionalism, respect, and fairness. I commit to continue to treat anyone who appears in court with dignity. Every attorney and citizen deserves a courtroom that is orderly, prepared, and consistent.

How do you stay grounded in this work?
!
"

I stay grounded through my family, my community, and my commitment to public service.

Being born and raised in Rankin County while also now raising a family here reminds me that court decisions affect neighbors, families, and futures, not just cases.

What values guide your decisions?
!
"

Integrity, fairness, independence, and respect for the law.

Those values guide how I approach my work and the role of Circuit Judge.

What should voters know about you?
!
"

They should know that Circuit Judges have trusted me for years to support them in this work for 13+ years. I understand the responsibility of the role, and I’m prepared to serve with steadiness and care.

Why is experience inside the court system important?
!
"

Circuit Court is not a place for learning on the job. Experience inside the system means understanding how cases move, how decisions are formed, and how to maintain consistency and fairness from the first day on the bench.

Why should voters trust you as Circuit Judge?
!
"

Because the people who know this job best, sitting Circuit Judges, have trusted me to help them do it for years. I’m ready to continue that work with humility, preparation, and respect for the law.
